Today would’ve been Donna Summer’s 65th birthday. Her passing was so sudden and the bulk of fans (including myself) had no idea that she was battling lung cancer. This woman was very special to me, I miss her as if I knew her personally. She was one of the most phenomenal vocalists to ever grace a stage. Donna maintained a career while raising children and in the latter, struggled with illness and yet carried herself with grace and poise through it all. So many wrote her off after the disco era but as you can see, Donna has a huge catalog well worth the investment of looking into. I hope the next generation appreciates her, even in death…the music lives on. Happy 65th Birthday Donna Summer!

Live Long and Prosper! and Happy 81st Birthday Nichelle Nichols! I was named after this beautiful singer, dancer and actress who is, of course, best known for her groundbreaking role as Lt. Uhura on ‘Star Trek.’ This photo is a screen grab from a ‘Star Trek,’ episode that aired on November 22, 1968, ‘Plato’s Stepchildren.’ Photo: CBS via Getty Images.

Beyoncé is EVERYTHING. She did the damn thing with this art and I don’t mean solely from a sociopolitical/womanist perspective, as I’ve written about already and discussed during #BlackFemMusic. I just mean this is her best music and visuals. I was scared to say this the night the album dropped but now I know; yes, BEYONCÉ is better than Dangerously In Love (which most fans agree was her best solo work). It is! All of her work is enjoyable but this moved into another level. Best videos. Innovative method of delivery. Every song has a video. Who does that? That’s really not common. Brilliant. Layered work. I see so many sides of her personalty and social roles and what she chooses to affirm or deny. Her complexity. Her contradictions. Her humanity. And when she talked about the album (here and here), I could feel a warm confidence even amidst the trepidation. I feel so proud of her.  Everyone is not required to like her or her music but I do. This album is everything. Boom. I jam to it almost everyday.
